THE capacity of the four-cylinder petrol engine fitted in Bedford 10/12and 15/17-cwt. vans has been increased from 1,508 c.c. to 1,594 c.c. This has been achieved by increasing the bore diameter to 3.214 in. from 3.125 in., the stroke being unchanged at 3 in.
Alternative compression ratios continue to be available, but these are 8.5 and 7-0 to 1 on the 1,594 c.c, unit compared with 8.1 and 7.0 to 1 on the 1,508 c.c. engine. In 8-5-to-1 form a maximum of 62 b.h.p. gross is developed at 4,400 r.p.m. and maximum gross torque is 92-7 lb. ft. at 2.600 whilst with the 7-0 to 1 compression ratio the larger engine has a maximum gross output of 59 b.h.p. at
the same speed and gives a maximum gross torque of 88.7 lb. ft. at 2,800 r.p.m. Comparable figures for the 1,508 c.c. engine were 55 b.h.p. at 4,200 r.p.m. and 85 lb. ft. at 2,400 r.p.m. with a compression ratio of 8.1 to I and 52 b.h.p. at 4,000 r.p.m. and 82 lb. ft. at 2,400 r.p.m. when the ratio was 7-0 to 1.
The clutch diameter is increased from 7-25 in. to 8 in. but there is no increase in price. The basic price of the 90-in.wheelbase 10/12-cwt. in £458 and of the 15/17-cwt. with the same wheelbase £468. Longer wheelbase versions (102 in.) add £20 to the price in both cases and the Perkins 4.99 diesel engine, which is still available, costs £120 extra.
