SIX specialists can run Ford's huge new parts distribution centre at Merkenich, Germany. One of six cranes, acting on orders from a computer, can locate a part in any of 26,000 storage compartments, pick it and deliver it to a fork truck in less than three minutes. Errors are said to be impossible.
That's German efficiency, even if it lacks the human touch.
