• FItters at one of Mercedes Benz's biggest vehicle dealerships staged two one-day strikes last week in a row over a new shift-working system.
Although the changes only affect oar mechanics at the garage in Edgware Road, London, 7 fitters on the commercial vehicle section came out in sympathy. A spokesman for the company says the truck fitters were not affected by the new shift system because they already operate 24/7. He adds that car fitters have accepted the package, which includes improved pay and bonuses, at the only two other dealerships affected by the changes.
The Transport & General Workers Union says the company plans to make all titters redundant at Edgware Road if the new contracts are not accepted. T&G organiser Tom Chinnery says: "The pay enhancements offered fell way short of what our members should expect for extending their working day. The company's response is callous and way over the top."
