• Goods in America were brought to a standstill last week as 190,000 workers at parcels giant UPS went on strike.
The UK's Transport and General Workers Union, which met representatives of the US Teamsters union to discuss the situation in London last week, moved quickly to reassure UK staff that they would not be affected. The Teamsters' visit was simply designed to "put its message across", says Ron Webb, TGWU national officer for road transport.
The strike in the US is said to be the most significant for 14 years. More than 12 million packages are believed to be piled up in depots-5% of the US gross national domestic product is at a standstill.
