• Hauliers buying a secondhand truck that they suspect might be an accident write-off will soon be able to check via an on-line information system set up between credit group CCN and the Association of British Insurers.
Motorfile contains vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for LGVs and vans, enabling users to search for details of any vehicle registered within the past 10 years.
A search will turn up details of the vehicle specification, whether it has been stolen and details of any number plate changes. It flashes warning messages if a vehicle has been scrapped, stolen, exported or subject to plate transfer. "We're talking about low numbers of pounds for a search," says CCN's Peter Brooker. "It's on a sliding scale."
Small users can call for details over the phone or access the database via Viewdata or a PC fitted with a modem and CCN's software.
