• Partly as a response to this problem the Freight Transport Association will launch its Good Lorry Code in the New Year. This requires firms signed up to devote time to reminding their drivers of "the special vulnerability of cyclists and motor cyclists". The FTA says the code will cover 1,000 vehicles including trucks from J Sainsbury, Tesco, Safeway, Wincanton, Exel Logistics, Christian Salvesen, Esso, Shell and Somerfield Stores.
It urges companies in the scheme to make sure the code is kept and says they should train drivers beyond the legal minimum. Vehicles covered will carry a "Well Driven?" sign, with a freephone number. Companies will have to respond in writing to public complaints within 21 days.
