WHAT was stated to be the most difficult transport operation ever undertaken in Australia was recently carried out by L. Arthur (Pty.), Ltd., Melbourne, with three Thornyeroft tractors, one of which was held as a reserve.

Two loads had to be carried from the ship's side at King's Wharf to the new Shell oil refinery at Corio Bay, three miles away, over a road with winding curves and several bridges. A new portion of a jettY at the harbour had to be built and several bends in the road realigned.

The first load was a flash towe? 16 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 80 ft. long, vary= ing in contour along its length. Its weight was 88 tons, and the overall height of vehicle and load was 24 ft.

The second load was also a tower, 141 ft. long arid 9 ft:in diameter at its base. 11 weighed 76 tons and the overall' length of the road train, with a prime mover at each end, was approximately 200 ft.

Two special steerable trailers, each with 32 wheels, were used to support the ends of the loads. Trusty and Amazon vehicles were employed, and the whole operation was completed by

eight men in two days.
