IMPORTERS have increased their penetration of the United Kingdom commercial vehicle market, selling 34.2 per cent of the 267,837 registered last year.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' figures for 1983 were published last week, and one of the leading importers, Daf Trucks, reported that its sales of 2,371 lorries and 209 coaches took it to its best-ever level.
Leading importer of heavy vehicles is Mercedes-Benz, which has reached fourth position in the over-3.5 tonne sector.
In his first annual review, Daimler-Benz chairman Werner Breitschwerdt reported that "dull" European sales generally meant that there was fierce competition "with the objective of safeguarding market shares and employment."
