• Police have recovered nearly 2100,000 worth of stolen carpets and power tools From eight unaccompanied trailers parked up in a truck compound in a County Durham village.
Detectives went to the yard at Ferryhill Station last week after a tip-off that a lolly load of Asda tomato ketchup was being hidden on the site, The consignment had been stolen from the Asda store in Houghton-le Spring on 4 January. When police arrived at the site they discovered the 40ft box trailer, with only two pallets of sauce remaining from the £80,000 load. A search revealed eight other trailers loaded with stolen power tools and carpets. The owner of the compound, a Darlington man, was arrested and released on police bail. Two other men from Hartlepool were also arrested and bailed in connection with the theft.
