• The 41-tonne weight limit has left clouds of confusion in all sectors of the industry, according to the Freight Transport Association.
In the week beginning 4 January the FTA members' advice centre received a record 1,090 calls about the new limits.
The FTA reports that trading standards officials and police have also shown confusion by regularly stopping trucks running at 40 and 41 tonnes.
"Messages are now going out from Trading Standards Bodies and ACK) advising officials of the new weights," says spokesman Geoff Dossetter.
The FTA advises hauliers who encounter problems running at the new limits to: • Download the DOT press notice on the internet dated 16 December 1998 (://www.detr.gov.uk) and carry a copy in the vehicle; • Contact their local testing stations; • Contact the VI enquiry desk on 01792 454888.
