• Optare's continued London success has benefitted the Volkswagen LT55-chassised CityPacer "Mobility" buses. London Regional Transport has bought three of the welfare vehicles, which are to be used on London Buses' Carelink service, connecting main British Rail terminal stations with the Airbus services to Heathrow from both Victoria and Euston.

Each vehicle is equipped with a Henderson Linwell tail lift and Fretwell wheelchair restraints to carry physically handicapped and elderly passengers safely. The CityPacers are among the first to be fitted with Telma electronic retarders and the vehicles are also fitted with Chrysler Torqueflite automatic tranmission.

The total carrying capacity is four wheelchairs and 12 seated passengers. Each seat is removeable and additional wheelchairs can be carried if required by clamping them to the linwin floor track.

The drop-down entrance step makes for easier access and is fitted with an electric interlock so that the vehicle cannot be driven off if the step is accidently left lowered.
