III Ryder has consolidated its leading position in commercial vehicle rental with an film purchase of Transport Development Group's Unilink Contract Hire.
The deal brings 150 employees based in five locations over to the Ryder camp and gives the .£100m turnover company three new sites, at Bolton, Trafford Park and Barking. It also adds 900 vehicles to Ryder's 8,300.
Duplicate depots at Leeds and Avonmouth will be merged, although staff numbers will not be cut, says Ryder managing director John Hodges.
For TDG the sale represents a move out of vehicle rental in the heavy sector. Unilink's managing director Bill Duffy continues to head TDG's light CV rental company Swift.
Vehicle use at Unilink during the past year is described by TDG as "first class", but its short-term rental fleet of 350 was considered too small to serve the rest of TDG's transport and distribution companies adequately.
