• A campaign to stop drivers hogging the middle and outside lanes of motorways has been requested by Conservative MP John Butcher in parliamentary questions to Transport Secretary John MacGregor.

• Roads minister Robert Key has rebuffed a plea from Teeside hauliers for
the t, A66 to be dualled: last week there was a five-truck pileup on a single-carriageway section of the A66 in Cumbria.
• Truck driver Norman Coventry of Victoria Road, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, has pleaded guilty to stealing almost £10,000-worth of diesel fuel from his employer Quantock Transport.
