Few business people have a kind word for the Working Time Directive, but Jamie McDonald, who runs independent dealership RJM Commercials from Besthorpe, Norfolk, is one who does.
He has recently set up a mobile contract cleaning business to clean fleets of trucks and vans within a 50to 60-mile radius of Besthorpe. “We go out to locations in Norwich, Thetford, Kings Lynn, and beyond,” he says.
He is especially busy from Friday to Monday when many vehicles are back at their home depot for the weekend.
McDonald says: “Our argument is that the restrictions imposed by the Directive mean that you need to make the best possible use of the working hours drivers have available: and there are more profitable things they can do for you than wash trucks.
“We’ve got a couple of vans equipped with steam cleaners, and our attitude is that if it needs washing, then we’ll wash it,” he adds. “That even includes caravans.”
