F. W. WOOLWORTH and Blue Circle Industries are this year's winners of the Centre for Physical Distribution Management's awards for excellence.
Sponsored by freighting newspaper Lloyd's List, the awards are made to the two CPDM member companies who submit the best papers describing improvements in their distribution techniques. Managing director of Lloyd's List publisher, Clifford Welch, presented the awards at the joint CPDM and Institute of Physical Distri
bution Management national conference held at Stratford-onAvon last week.
The F. W. Woolworth paper was by company distribution executive Mike Pedler and detailed how Woolworth had assumed more control of deliveries to its stores and cut average delivery times. Instead of direct deliveries to the stores by the suppliers or their carriers, goods are now routed through four new Woolworth regional transhipment centres where they are consolidated for dedicated delivery runs.
Blue Circle Industries' paper also involved the introduction of six new regional distribution centres in order to deliver at least 95 per cent of decorative products orders on a guaranteed date within five working days.
