• Twelve truck drivers have now admitted committing tachograph offences while they worked for bankrupt haulier John Goddard of Carlisle, whose company crashed last August with the lost of 30 jobs. Last week four drivers appeared before Carlisle magistrates to admit keeping inaccurate records for journeys—in some cases covering hundreds of miles.
Peter Bayly, prosecuting, said police were tipped off that there were problems with the tachograph records kept by the company's drivers. He told the court: "The police set up an operation in November, checking the movements of vehicles throughout the country with officers doing silent checks, noting the location and times that particular lorries were seen." Police searched Goddard's Kingstown base, seizing tacho charts and drivers' worksheets.
The four who admitted keeping false records were Brian Duffield, 52, of Newtown Road, Carlisle, who admitted two charges; Keith Ridley, also 52, of Church Road, Maryport, who admitted one charge; Kevin Reed, 36, of Westmacott Street, Hexham, who admitted one charge; and Alan Pigg, 30, of Market Place, Hexham, who pleaded guilty to four charges.
Reed, Ridley and Duffield were each fined 1100; Pigg was Fined £400, each With £60 costs. Another driver has admitted to three similar tachograph offences on Friday but several former Goddard's drivers have denied similar offences and will face trials at a later date.
