• Four hauliers appeared before the Scottish LA at Inverness last week as show cause hearings.
Murdo MacDonald and Son Ltd, Muir of Ord (licence: two vehicles and two trailers), had one vehicle curtailed for six weeks. Two of the firm's vehicles had been inspected by an examiner and given prohibition orders.
An agent for the firm said his clients had to rely on garages for maintenance and had been let down by them.
A one-man haulage firm in Elgin — G. A. Shiach and Son — had its vehicle licence suspended for two weeks. Ownerdriver Mr N. Shiach was stopped with and overload of sand of 2 tons 2cwt. Mr Shiach told the LA he had been soaked in the rain, was feeling miserable and had not checked the weight ticket he was given on leaving a quarry.
Alexander Morrison (Builders) Ltd, Tain, (licence: 21 vehicles; 19 on the road) had one vehicle removed for four weeks. This followed five prohibition notices and two sheriff court convictions for faulty brakes and tyres.
Mr Alex Morrison, a director, said he now used a system of spot checks as well as monthly checks, and made drivers fill in cards which listed repairs needed.
The LA said he felt the firm had a sensible approach to fleet maintenance and he didn't expect to see them before him again.
A. M. Mann, of Munlochy, was given a strong warning for failing to keep maintenance records.
