A sealer for bolted panels has been introduced by 3M United Kingdom to cater for the increasing use of bolted panels in body construction. The sealer consists of a 1in. x bin. strip of synthetic putty-like material that is said to provide good adhesion to bare and painted metal surfaces, glass and plastics materials. It affords a watertight seal and remains permanently soft and flexible, which ensures effective long-term sealing that is proof against vibration and movement of panels. The material is grey and provides a suitable surface for painting over. It withstands low bake treatment.
The required length of sealer is unrolled from a 55ft reel and pressed into position, any surplus being removed with a wetted knife. No preparation is required provided the surface is dry and reasonably clean. A typical wing requires approximately 5ft of sealer at a cost of about 6p per foot. In addition to wings and main body panels, applications include glass-to-metal seals. Perspex-to-metal rooflight seals and below-cover straps. It can also be used in bimetallic joints to prevent electrolytic corrosion. Made by: 3M United Kingdom Ltd, 3M House, Wigmore Street, London W1A 1ET. •
