Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Registrations of trucks (above 3.5 tonnes) resumed their upward surge in August after a slight fall in July to reach 55,232, an increase of 8.22% over the same month last year.

Though top-selling marque Iveco Ford sold 16 more trucks last month than in August 1988, its total registrations so far this year of 11,060 are still slightly down on 1988.

Leyland Dais fortunes in the UK are also slightly down on last year. The Anglo-Dutch company registered 300 fewer trucks this August than last, to give it 10,172 registrations in the first eight months of the year There is no sign of a hiccup in the sales growth at Mercedes-Benz, however, with truck registrations this year up 12%, to 7,618. Volvo has experienced similar growth to give it fourth place in the market with 5,291 registrations.

ERF's sales are up almost 24% on last year, but this looks unlikely to continue given the company's announcement of job losses and a cut in output (CM 24-30 Aug).

Like Iveco Ford and Leyland Daf, Renault has experienced a slight drop in sales this year (to 2,972), but the company will be buoyed by a 12.6% growth in sales in August compared with the same month last year. Meanwhile, Scania's UK truck registrations continue to improve this year with sales up almost 29% to 2,712. Seddon Atkinson's sales are up 2.4% to 1,521 and Foden's sales have jumped 30.4% to 1,225. AWD registrations have now reached 972.

El In the panel van market, Ford's dominance continues with sales of Transits up over 28%, to 55,020 registrations. Sales of the Leyland Daf 200 and 400 series (formerly Sher pas) have fallen by 8.4% to 10,737, while Renault's Trafic and Master vans have recorde 9,416 registrations — an increase of 19.4%.
