• Drivers and operators found guilty of causing fatal accidents could be charged with corporate manslaughter under a Labour Party plan to crack down on industry cowboys.
In a statement of intentions to be released in November, Labour is expected to outline a commitment to get tough with operators who flout the law and put the public at risk.
Labour Transport spokesman Michael Meacher told last week's Transport & General Workers Union conference that he will crack down on transport industry cowboys if Labour is re-elected: "Companies must be made accountable for the actions of their staff when those actions
result from specific instructions to break the law or cut corners," he said.
Labour's Ian Willmott says: "We have had representations from both operators and unions saying that there is a problem with cowboys within the transport industry in general and we want to make sure all hauliers reach proper standards." Labour intends to apply the new
law across the whole of the transport industry including airlines, coaches, trains as well hauliers.
