For the first time in many years a British vehicle manufacturer has successfully wrested control back from a foreign owner. In this case, however, it's a miniature triumph since the manufacturer is Corgi Classics. The company has effectecl a management-buy outfrom its US owner of five years, Mattel Inc. Corgi is a mature AO next year and managing director Chris Guest says the company is better off without Mattel, as the American firm concentrates on the toy market. Corgi Classics, as any collector knows, are not merely toys. They are the "ones with the windows", a phrase coined in the 1950s in reference to the company's attention to detail.
