W ith vehicles rolling on and
VV off ferries on the LiverpooVBetfast and
Liverpool/Dublin routes, Merseyside police see a steady stream of Irish trucks passing through their territory, but they insist that they do not have a policy of targeting Irish-registered vehicles.
"We don't single out vehicles from any one country, and I think that applies to most police forces with responsibility for a port of entry," says Constable James Keenan, "We treat all trucks identically, no matter what their nationality."
Keenan specialises in tachograph investigation and accident analysis. He provides a support service to traffic officers when they carry out roadside checks, and is also involved in training them. "We don't have too many problems with Irish vehicles as it happens," he continues. "Operators and drivers seem to be behaving themselves.
"Most of the trucks we catch breaking the drivers' hours rules are on local delivery work."
