• The old directive, which was open to interpretation, has been replaced by a regulation that sets the same standards for all member states.
• By 2009 all vehicles must be fitted with satellite navigation/tracking systems so they can be monitored to ensure drivers stick to their route plan and allow animals the required rest breaks.
• Ali trailers must be fitted with statutory ventilation, temperature control systems and watering facilities, • Horses will travel in individual stalls on journeys of over eight hours. Unbroken horses must not travel on long journeys.
• Drivers and other staff must sit exams to gain certificates of competence in animal handling and transport.
• The law will be extended to cover assembly centres, markets and slaughterhouses, with mandatory training for staff.
*There will be stricter monitoring and enforcement of journey plans and responsibility for animal welfare.
