Harris Transport was set up with two Volvo FL6 rigids and an FL7 tractor unit. It currently operates 46 trucks (including those under the Commodore Haulage banner), of which 37 are at Southampton and the rest at Rotherham.
Volvo has lost favour in recent years and the balance of power lies with Daf, which accounts for 40 Harris trucks. The latest fleet replacements are two CF85s: a pair of Euro-5 XF105s are due to arrive this month.
As well as a predilection for Daf, the firm is plumping for ZF's AS-Tronic gearbox; so far 14 of its trucks have the semi-automated box. "The drivers love them:' says George Harris. "Some were a bit sceptical to start with because it's not a gearstick and a clutch, but they take them out and they come back grinning like Cheshire cats. "I don't think anyone's had a bad word to say about it The only problem we've found is that when you get to a hilt it can't anticipate which gear you need."
