The flagship Oaf is one of the front-runners this year. following the victory of the XF95 in 2002. Star of the XF105 line-up is a new 12.8-litre engine capable of 51Chp, with a 560hp version waiting in the wings, but Daf's engineers have also taken the opportunity to address some of the criticisms made by reviewers. A thorough makeover of the interior gives it plenty of driver appeal; the exterior has been smartened up and now sports a market-leading mirror set-up. In any case the XF105's real strengths come to the fore where it belongs, out on the road. The new engine gives a welcome increase in torque. and engine braking is dramatically enhanced particularly at low revs. Handling is greatly improved too.
VERDICT We're sure it will be in the top two this year, but wouldn't care to bet on whether the UK's market-leading marque will take gold or silver.
