If the UK Border Agency detects clandestines in a truck. currently the driver and its employer are each liable to a £2,000 fine per stowaway if it is deemed that they did not take enough precautions to prevent the incident.
Previously, drivers have told CM they have fallen victim to the crime by stowaways cutting their TIR cord to enter the trailer, and then discreetly piecing it back together. A new product has been launched called the Glow Cord to try to put an end to this deception.
Creator Nik Cooper of Running Man Designs explains: "Our cord is fitted to a curtainside wagon in the same method as any TIR cord, through the eyelets of the strap clasp.
"The cord is filled with a liquid which, when cut, flows out of the cord and can visibly be seen to have emptied and therefore has been tampered with. The liquid also provides a secondary deterrent by preventing the newly cut ends being re-glued together, therefore preventing the clandestines from repairing the cord and hiding evidence of tampering."
