Clarify Applications for New Vehicles
MO effort should be spared to speed up the war "effort, and I should be obliged if you will find space in " The Commercial Motor" for this letter, as I consider the subject matter may have the desired effect, if it be brought .10 the notice of your readers.
I take it for granted that most potential users of new vehicles know the procedure to be followed when they wish to make application for a new vehicle, but I suggest, in the national interest, and in order to simplify the job of the Ministry of War Transport in making a decision, that not only do they submit a formal application, but also a covering letter clarifying it and describing clearly the type of chassis ant the class of work for • which it is required.
Anyone in doubt concerning, an application should make inquiries from a commercial-vehicle distributor
or manufacturer for advice. I know of two or three cases recently where the Ministry has granted vehicles totally unsuitable for the purpose of the applicant. In one case, two "localized transport" tractors were granted to a concern which wished to early aeroplane parts a distance of 80 miles each way. In another case, a long-wheelbase type was granted to a user of tippers.
It is evident that either the applicant did not clearly state his case, or that the person responsible for grant.ing the licence has quite a lot to learn about commercial vehicles and their users. The result is that more time is taken up in resubmitting the application and a further waiting ,period endured whilst the important work for which the vehicle is required' is not carried out and the national effort is retarded accordingly.
