• Nine tipper drivers have been charged with leaving mud on the highway after driving down a dirt track to a pit which has no truck or wheel washing facilities.
Police in Essex set up roadblocks on the old A13, now known as the A1013, between Orsett Cock and Stanford following scores of complaints about mud left by tipper trucks leaving the pit owned by Stephen Andrews.
In an angry confrontation Andrews used his own car to try to block the police operation,
During the two-day roadblock, on 29-30 November, the police also prohibited one vehicle with multiple defects working out of the infill site.
Thurrock Borough Council is to pressure Andrews to install washing equipment at the pit but it has no power to enforce this. Meanwhile the council is sweeping the road twice a day.
