• Three British drivers are among 30 European drivers facing fines of up to 4:500 after their trucks were impounded in Tarragona, northern Spain, by local police, for what the drivers describe as "trumped up charges".
Driver Fred Perry of Gosportbased haulier K&F International spent three days in the Civil Guard compound after he was approached while changing a wheel on the side of the road. He was fined £500 for not carrying two weeks' tachographs, despite the fact he had just picked up the vehicle.
Drivers from many parts of the European Union are stuck in the compound.
One German driver was stopped for not having refrigeration equipment running, even though he explained it ran on a thermostat. German employers sent a legal representative to try and negotiate the release of impounded trucks, without success.
