• The Scottish Co-Op has abandoned its in-house transport operation and awarded a £10 million contract to third party distributor Scottish Road Services.
The contract will be operated from the Co-Op's distribution centre in Cumbernauld with SRS responsible for delivering goods to 355 Scottish stores.
SRS has bought the Scottish Co-Op's fleet of 21 artics, six box vans and 54 trailers, and has installed an automatic vehicle wash at the Cumbernauld distribution site Sister firm BRS already does some Co-Op work in the UK. El This week also saw CoOperative Retail Services demand that all suppliers use transport operator Scorpio International for store deliveries. The United Carriers International firm will provide a nationwide delivery service to around 254) suppliers, many of which previously ran in-house transport operations.
Scorpio's sales and marketing director Nigel Plenderleith says no new vehicles will be bought for the extra work: "We will be using our existing network and some vehicles from a £750,000 contract which we are currently negotiating."
