by Sally Nash • The Government has revealed that seven local authorities will be involved in a pilot scheme designed to impose £20 fines on dri vers who leave (heir engines running.
The seven councils involved in the pilot scheme are: Westminster, Swansea, Glasgow, Middlesbrough, Canterbury, Bristol and Birmingham.
Vehicles that need to keep their engines
running to power equipment such as tail-lifts will be exempt, and the Department of
Transport says that council parking attendants and (he police "would hopefully use discretion" when handing out fines to essential traffic such as delivery vehicles.
"We are not in the business of penalising people going about their daily business," it says.
The experiment is mostly aimed at stopping coach drivers leaving their engines running while waiting for passengers. If it is a success and pays for itself, it is likely to be adopted nationwide.
