• Charges have finally been brought against a senior manager of Skipton-based Fewston Transport after one of its tippers crashed and killed six people in the Sowerby Bridge disaster more than four years ago.
Eric Preston, who was transport manager of the now-defunct firm, was due to answer corporate manslaughter charges before Newcastle Crown Court on 13 January.
As CM went to press the case had been delayed by 24 hours.
Although the company was found guilty of operating a vehicle with defective brakes and fined the maximum /5,000, Preston has only now been prosecuted. All eight brakes were found to have failed before the vehicle crashed in 1993.
Relatives of the crash victims won a judicial review of the case. Preston is the first transport manager to face manslaughter charges.
Li Last week Tony Eyres, the company's managing director, was banned from being a director for the maximum five years by Skipton magistrates after he was found guilty of failing to keep proper accounts. He was fined £4,750 with £2,000 costs.
