• More than 3% of trucks on Scottish roads are unlicensed, says the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. Now it is teaming up with the Vehicle Inspectorate to crack down on the operators of the 1,150 untaxed trucks, promising fines of up to £25,000.
For three months from 12 January, Scottish VI testing stations will check the VED disc of every truck submitted for annual tests. Operators of untaxed vehicles will be reported to the DVLA and if a licence is not taken out within six weeks of the test the DVLA will investigate and a fine may be imposed. The DVLA believes unlicensed vehicles in Scotland cost the UK £1.8m a year. A similar scheme took place early last year in the north-west of England, bringing in an extra Zlm in VED payments, says the DVLA. lithe Scottish trial is as successful the system will be operated nationwide.
