III A former haulier has set up a CO-Operative to help owner-drivers and small haulage firms to buy fuel, insurance and other services at the bulk prices obtained by the larger firms.
Steve Hackett, of Derbyshire-based firm Hackett & Associates, claims to be able to save hauliers as much as 5.8p/lit on diesel costs and 60% on monthly mobile phone bills.
The company, described by Hackett as "consultants to the road transport industry", has already attracted 90 members who each pay a annual registration fee of 210 (exVAT) per vehicle.
Hackett admits he receives commission from some of the companies he deals with, but says he will only be linked to those offering the cheapest or best services for the hauliers in the group—rather than those paying the highest commission.
"The Road Haulage and Freight Transport associations are simply not doing enough for the small haulier and often people are being ripped off by their suppliers," says Hackett. "By linking smaller companies under the Hackett umbrella, we will have the buying power the larger companies are able to achieve."
