In response to Karen Miles' article headed "EC Moves on Eastern Threat" (CM 1-7 July), I think that the British Government should start looking into companies in the UK who are using non-EU drivers.
It seems that nothing has come of the previous article when the long-awaited answer on EU driving licences was forthcoming. These operators should be named and shamed publicly because if they have nothing to hide they have nothing to fear.
One large Kent operator was recently heard to say, when confronted by someone outside the transport industry, that if one of his Lithuanian drivers were stopped driving a UK truck he had nothing to fear because he had, quote, "a secret ingredient" for the authorities concerned.
Well I am sure that you and the industry as a whole would be keen to know what this ingredient is, and I feel that Karen Miles may be the correct person to ask him.
It seems that Willi Betz is always named in your publication so I see no harm if the UK operators who are doing the same are as well.
These firms are wiping our small industry out and nothing is being done by the Government to stop this. I think that confronting these firms, through your pages, would be an adequate first step.
