• Briton's courier firms have given a lukewarm response to the Government's plans to transform the Post Office into a public limited company From April 2000 the cut-off point for the Post Office's monopoly over mail delivery is to be reduced from £1 to 50p.
This seems to open up the UK mail sector to courier firms—but some major operators say they have no plans to capitalise on this market. TNT spokesman David Hare says: It is a step in the right direction, but really there is not a lot of difference; a change of £1 to 50p represents just 5% of the market."
That view is shared by Murray Hogg, managing director of Newcastle-based Murray Hogg, which is already involved in parcels distribution. Hogg says that despite the new 50p threshold, he is not tempted to move into the mail market.
