The Employment Relations Bill is expected to receive Royal Assent in the autumn. Among the measures it will introduce are: • Improving the operation of the statutory recognition procedure. This will include a clearer definition of the bargaining unit and the topics it should discuss II Simpler law on industrial action ballots and more protection against dismissal for employees taking action IN Measures to enable unions to expel racists or others whose views are incompatible with trade union aims II The intimidation of workers by employers during recognition ballots will be tackled and new rules will be introduced to define proper campaigning activity by employers and unions during such ballots • The rights of individual employees will be improved, such as a clarification of the role of the companion in grievance and disciplinary hearings and new protections for employees who have been dismissed or treated in a detrimental way because they have been away on jury service III New measures to improve enforcement of the national minimum wage II Regulations to introduce information and consultation in the workplace in line with the Information and Consultation Directive • Funds for trade unions to modernise their operations O See CM 26 August for full details on the Employment Relations Bill
