THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association has slammed the Chancellor Gordon Brown's Comprehensive Spending Review as "disgraceful" after almost £800m was apparently wiped off his previous transport budget.
The government plans to provide an average annual growth of 4.5% over the next three years:by 2007-08 expenditure will be f2.4bn higher than in 2004-05.
However, Brown has failed to explain why the total Department for Transport expenditure for 2004-05 will be just fl 0.4bn — well down on the f11.2bn promised two years ago. The ETA's chief executive, Richard Turner, says: "The Ten Year Transport plan set up in 2000 was recognised in 2002 as needing a substantial increase in investment."
But the Da' says the HSE and the ScotRail franchise have moved to other departments so the budget has decreased.
