TNT IS TO meet Westminster and Camden City Councils to discuss why it is paying more than £300,000 a year in parking fines within the M25.
TNT operations director Nigel Barton and other members of the Express Carriers Group will "push forward 10 points we think are needed to resolve the dispute over parking charges in London". These include agreed timed deliveries and the replacement of the London Lorry Ban with the Freight Transport Association's London Delivery Disc.
"We have to get wardens to allow delivery vehicles the full 20 minutes unloading and loading time," says Barton. "We want the councils to brief the parking wardens about their responsibilities and their overzealousness in handing out tickets.
"Apparently this is already being done by Westminster Council but we have seen no actual results so far. Our fines are certainly not diminishing." Mayor Ken Livingstone's team have asked to be briefed on the outcome of the meetings.
Department for Transport figures show some London boroughs have tripled their profits from parking charges since 1997. "The only surprise is that it is only three times," says Barton.
In response to a parliamentary question, Transport Secretary Alistair Darling revealed half the national total of £966m was paid by London drivers.
Chris Davey, MD of Hertfordbased HRH Transport, describes the charges as "an outrageously illegal tax". He passes the cost of the £50 parking fines on to customers: "We explain everything on the invoice. I think too many just absorb the costs."
