CLACKMANNANSH IRE haulier Peter W McLaren is closing after 18 years, claiming it can no longer tolerate low rates.
Owner Peter McLaren, 50, says he is taking early retirement and has decided to close his Kincardine-on-Forth, Fife, business on Saturday 17 July, when Malcolm Harrison Auctions will sell his six HGVs.
Five employees will be made redundant.
He tells CM: "We have been busy enough, but the margins are just not there. By the time you pay wages and fuel costs, you are not left with much. There's also competition from operators cutting prices. It's just not justifiable."
The business started in 1992 with just one lorry. McLaren says there are several firms in the area that can pick up his former contracts.
"There are many hauliers who are in too deep and can't afford to get out of the industry but I've decided to walk away while I can.
don't see the economy improving greatly any time soon," McLaren concludes.
