NEWLY ELECTED MP Chris Kelly tells CM that ho wants to actively represent the interests of road transport businesses and is making steps to improve the profile of the industry among MPs.
Kelly, son of Keltruck owner Chris Kelly and Tory MP for Dudley South, has joined the All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group to promote a dialogue with the vehicle manufacturing sector.
He has also become a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Highway Maintenance, which was incorporated on Monday with 17 crossparty and cross-chamber members. and will look 'n aclOress the funding of improvements 10 UK roads.
"There has been an anti-motoring agenda, going back to the early stages of the last parliament, and when you challenge that, you can expect a fight," Kelly insists.
He cites the example of Dick Denby's brush with the media last year following his attempted longer. heavier vehicle trial (see p32) "People said he wanted to drive massive juggernauts through villages: that was not the case. We need to ensure people have respect for the job."
