Stobart Group deputy CEO Richard Butcher says it wants to attract more road transport infrastructure and investment to the Cumbria region and establish the county as a logistics hub.

His comments came at the second meeting of the Cumbria Logistics Employer Forum last week. The organisation was set up earlier this year with funding from Carlisle City Council, the Skills Funding Agency and Skills for Logistics, and boasts 60 logistics firms as members in the region.

Vice-chairman John Scott says;" We know the type of business we can attract and target, but we are realistic. There is the capacity for a huge network, but there is not the volume going through it. There is an opportunity for a national distribution centre, if you are in the parcels sector, for example. Land is cheaper here than in the Midlands and the South-East and you could base parcel traffic around it."

The next meeting will be in September. with Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell as guest speaker.
