• The Department of Employment has been asked to overrule a decision of the Pay Board not to allow a 10 per cent shift allowance to 1500 employees of Tyneside PTE at Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields. Practically all the employees work a shift system, and the increase would amount to between £2 and £3 a week. The men's representatives have announced that unless the Pay Board's decision is reversed by July 2 a meeting of the men will be called to discuss strike action.
The shift allowance is already being paid to municipal and private companies in other parts of the country, including the former Sunderland municipal undertaking, which became part of the PTE in April. Dr T. Ridley, director-general of the PTE, says the Executive wants to pay the award and has set money aside to cover the cost. Mr William Elliott, Conservative MP for Newcastle North, has asked the Department of Employment to overrule the Pay Board, on the grounds that it was a special occasion.
