• Increased engine power and the fitment of speed limiters are two factors which adversely affect tyre wear, according to the Continental Tyre Group's Technical Service Bulletin.
A comprehensive programme of tyre monitoring by Continental's customer service organisation has established that speed limiters reduce tyre mileage by up to 45%, depending on operating conditions, irrespective of whether the device is hydrodynamic, electrical or mechanical.
The effect is less marked with engine horsepower, but Continental says that a 20% increase in power can lead to a 300 reduction in tyre mileage.
The company adds that although these increases in tyre wear rates are significant, they must be balanced against the positive advantages of increased engine power and the use of speed limiters.
