• A golden opportunity to ease driver shortages is being missed because hauliers are failing to make the job attractive to women, a union claims.
Diana Holland, Transport & General Workers' Union organiser for women, says the industry effectively gives women the cold shoulder by failing to consider their special needs, such as for separate sleeping areas and toilets. 'The industry is missing an enormous opportunity to sort out the recruitment issue and also to give the work a more positive image," she adds.
Her comments follow a meeting 490RiPt at T&G headquarters with the DOT 4. minister for women, Beverley = Hughes, and female transport workers from all over the country.
