RUBBER DAMPER FOR ,FUEL PIPES

SOME interesting investigations into the causes and cure of the failure of high-pressure fuel pipes on compressionignition engines; have been made by C.A.V., Ltd., Acton, London, W.3. It has been found that the most effective way of overcoming or lessening the trouble is to pass the pipes through some material capable of absorbing vibrational energy, C.A.V. Ltd., have designed a damper in which synthetic rubber is used, the bush being held in a metal housing which fits but does not deflect the rubber.

Some of the main features which should be observed when setting out to combat pipe fracture are: (1) the pump mounting and the part of the engine structure to which it is attached should he as rigid as possible; (2) the pipes should be clamped at about the midpoint to the engine structure. A coil in a pipe should be ignored when determining the Mid-point; (3) the pipe should, as far as possible, be parallel with the axis of the damper; (4) the pipe should be smooth in the area surrounded by the damper.

These dampers are available in single, double or triple pipe units.

BETTER CONDITIONS FOR MILK WORKERS

'A PROPOSAL that work after 3 p.m. on Saturday be paid for at double time, instead of time-and-a-half, as at present, has been accepted from the Transport and General Workers' Union by the Milk Distributive Wages Council. The T.G.W.U. pointed out that in some instances a worker could be performing a Saturday duty on a day which would normally have been a rest period.

Representations by the Union regarding holiday overtime payments have also been accepted by the council. It is proposed that the total number of hours of work which must be performed before overtime is paid on a weekly basis shall be reduced by 71 hrs. for each statutory holiday, not being a worker's rest day, which falls within the working week.

Both these proposals will be issued to the trade for consideration.
