• A truck driver could cost insurers £250,000 after a car smashed into the side of his truck while he attempted a dangerous U-turn. Kevin Barrett attempted the manoeuvre on the A46 in Nottinghamshire after missing a turning, Nottingham Crown Court heard.
The brake cable between the lveco tractor and the triaxle trailer snapped, leaving the vehicle straddling both lanes in the early hours of the morning.
Barrett, who has since lost his job, admitted dangerous driving. He was disqualified from driving for a year, ordered to pay 2500 prosecution costs and given a community punishment order of 180 hours. The judge described the U-turn as a disastrous decision.
The car driver is still recovering from a leg injury caused by the crash in April last year and is about to pursue a compensation claim. Emma Cutts, who defended Barrett, says this could be worth up to £250,000.
