I read with interest in CM about proposed speed limiting of 7.5tonne vehicles. Long overdue in my opinion; we don't need these motors hurling down the outside lane on motorways at 70mph, fully loaded.
As for the industry pundits who claim that such a limit will devastate their businesses, they should never have needed to set schedules on 70mph running in the first place, but that's how bad things are in transport today, with customers' often unreasonat demands taking preference over both safety and an operator's profitability.
However, we should be concerned that light vans, ma of which are capable of 100m speeds, are not included in th proposed legislation. I heard one idiot boasting on a ferry ( how he could drive fully loade from Preston (Lanes) to Nice (1,200 miles) in under 24 hour in a Sprinter 312 van!
One persistent problem ir such matters is a lack of harmonisation between EU countries, as they all seem to have different speed limits fo vans and 7.5-tonners. This is why we should all get togethe and do things the same way: speed limits; fuel duty; VED; drivers' wages.
