Start looking as early as possible and bring the recruit in to work alongside the existing boss for a changeover period.
Don't be put aft if they don't have transporl experience—they might have experience running similar organisations with spectacular results.
Establish thzt they are absolutely honest. Accountancy training doesn't automatically install honesty (those accountants we refer to here have that professional integrity).
Have an open mind. If you are not prepared to be open to new ideas there is no point in bringing in an outsider.
Give the person a financial incentive to make it a success, such as a profit-sharing scheme.
Include a get-out clause in the contract to allow you to walk away if it doesn't work out after a few months—but do give the newcomer time to make a difference.
