• Bus drivers in the North East are receiving stern reminders of the penalty for drinking while on duty. A driver with United Automobile Services Ltd has been sent to prison for driving a bus while under the influence of drink. His bus crashed, killing the conductor, and at the trial it was stated that the conductor had also been drinking.
In another case, a driver with the Northern General Transport Co Ltd, on a service between South Shields and Newcastle, collided with a car and a bus shelter. The bus companies have warned that drinking on duty will mean instant dismissal.
